So much goes on behind the scenes in the arts and sometimes in plain view that few of us know about. We would like to change that, at least a little. Starting in January, 2011, we began to publicly recognize contributions to the arts by individuals, organizations or businesses in Genesee and Orleans Counties on a monthly basis. We welcome suggestions from the community for our Spotlight. If you would like to suggest an individual, organization or business, please contact GO ART! If you don’t like forms, call, write or stop by GO ART! We would like to know your name, contact information, who you are suggesting and why. We appreciate your input. Use this form to nominate a deserving individual or organization.
February 2012 Spotlight: St. James Church, Batavia

GO ART! takes pride this month in recognizing St James Episcopal Church in Batavia for its ongoing contribution to the arts in western New York. The St. James congregation was founded in 1815, predating the founding of Batavia. The church itself was built in the early 20th century, based in the Neo-Gothic style of English country churches. The church is currently in the process of renovation, particularly of the Bell Tower.
The congregation and its church have provided a beautiful, serene and acoustically resonant ambiance for a great variety of musical performances in addition to their regular worship services.
Musical and dramatic presentations have included "Dickens: A Christmas Carol," Genesee Symphony and Genesee Chorale concerts, "Cabaret" with Encore! Theatre Arts, "Guys and Dolls" in Concert, Halloween Spooktacular Costume Ball, House and Garden Tour, Joseph and John Irrera in Concert, Maureen Scoville's Treasures of Batavia posters as well as Lessons and Carols by area Episcopal Churches, among others. Currently scheduled are Cabaret 2012 with Jon Seiger and Bev Miner and Wednesday Bistro with Charles Bradley.
Thanks to the St. James Community for enriching our lives and gracing us with such a variety of musical experiences.

GO ART! takes pleasure in announcing the selection of the Orleans Renaissance Group for recognition as GO ART!’s October 2011 Monthly Arts Spotlight in light of its embracing “art and culture in your own backyard” and its overall contribution to art and culture in the community. Notably:
Members of the Orleans Renaissance Group consist of Skip Draper, Christopher Busch, Marsha Winters, Virginia Kropf, Steven and Anne Bunch, Aaron Grabowski, Andrew Meier and Adam Tabelski.
They define renaissance as “a revival of architecture, art and culture; a translation; a rebirth.” The Orleans Renaissance Group is a volunteer not-for-profit organization founded in 1997. They are part of a larger spirit of rebirth and revival that has taken hold in the Village of Medina. They have hosted jazz, chamber music and full orchestral events including the Genesee Chorale, Genesee Symphony Orchestra and Children’s Choir and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Their upcoming event is “Nunset Boulevard” by the Lake Plains Players at Leonard Oakes Estate Winery to benefit the Bent’s Opera House Restoration Project. They have also taken the initiative in restoring Bent’s Opera House, one of the oldest surviving theaters in the nation, built during the Civil War.
We thank the Orleans Renaissance Group and its members for leadership in remembering the past and bringing those memories into the present and future.
September 2011 Spotlight: Rose Caccamise
Go Art! takes pride this month in recognizing Rose Caccamise and her many contributions to the arts and the arts community. Following her family tradition, she operates Roxy’s Music Store founded by her parents in Batavia Roxy’s has been a fixture in the musical community for generations.
Never one to blow her own horn, Rose has been very active behind the art scene. She and her staff have for years made beginning musicians feel at home with their instruments and budding talent, playing an active part in school music programs as well as providing in-store lessons.
In addition, she has been very active in promoting and publicizing community arts events. She has often contributed to providing musical instruments as prizes in fundraisers for many non-profit organizations.
Rose was once quoted as saying that her hobby was being nice to people. Her kindness is more than a hobby and has become a way of life for her in her quiet, unassuming way.
Thank you Rose for being you and for all you have done for the arts and for our community.
August 2011 Spotlight: Alma Latina

GO ART! takes pleasure in recognizing Alma Latina in its August Monthly Arts Spotlight. We thank them for sharing with us the dance culture of Mexico, enriching our lives and bringing joy to our souls.
Alma Latina translates as “Latin soul,” and is led by Leonel Rosario and members of his extended family. The group presents traditional dances from various regions in Mexico. Rosario’s family and friends, who reside in the Albion area, formed the group in 2003 and perform for community events, schools, civic organizations and celebrations in western and central New York. Leonel and the dancers have led workshops and residencies in several area schools. Members dance not only to maintain traditions from their homeland here in the United States, but also to demonstrate some of the many variations in dance and musical traditions that exist in Mexico. As Leonel says, “We like to show that there is not only Mariachi in Mexico.”
They also perform traditional dances from Oaxaca in southern Mexico, where Leonel and others grew up dancing as a part of town festivals, school programs, and social events. Often accompanied by a town brass band, these dances are somewhat less formal and more communally oriented. Their costumes follow more closely the traditional dress that can still be found in Oaxaca, including simple huaraches, or sandals.
They also perform Polkas Norteñas from northern states like Chihuahua and Monterrey. Norteño music includes Germanic influences (including the accordion and polka beat) combined with Mexican folk guitar styles, and is close cousins with Tejano or Tex-Mex music in the southern United States. Dance attire reflects the cowboy image with boots, jeans, and hat.
Thanks for your inspiration!
July 2011 Spotlight: Jon Seiger

GO ART! takes pleasure in announcing the selection of Jon Seiger for its July 2011 Spotlight recognition. Although he seems to be better known around the world than he is locally, he remains one of Genesee County’s hidden treasures. Known for his Louis Armstrong singing style, Jon plays Trumpet and Piano and sings Vocals. He studied with Jimmy Giuffre, John McNeill, and trumpet great Roy Eldridge, is a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, and is one of very few performing deaf musicians.
Jon has played with such notables as The Drifters, The Shirelles, Ella Fitzgerald, Doc Cheatham, Marty Napoleon, Joe Muranyi, Dick Katz, Chuck Folds, Maynard Ferguson, Billy Eckstine, Arvell Shaw, Panama Francis, Joe Williams, Bob Haggart, Oliver Jackson, Bobby Pratt, Johnny and Edgar Winter, Gap Mangione, Nancy Kelly, Jimmy Maxwell, Jimmy McPartland, Sammy Price, Dick Oakley, Ken Peplowski, Sol Yaged, Fred Raulston, Ed Polcer, Stephanie Nakasian, and many others. In 1988 he performed at Carnegie Hall with the Hi-Tops.
Jon was the house bandleader at The King Cole Room at The St. Regis Hotel in New York City for 3 years. Although Jon is deaf, he swings with many bands, including the All-Stars, the Metropolitan Stompers, the Hi-Tops, and the Rhythm Aces, and has played with several surviving members of Louis Armstrong's band. Jon has performed in England, France, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Poland, Belgium, Lichtenstein, and Spain. Jon performs several times a year in Argentina, Jamaica, Canada, and many other places in the United States and around the world.
He performs frequently in Western New York and beyond. He played with the All Stars at the 2011 Rochester International Jazz Fest and will play at this year’s Taste of Stafford with his band the All Stars on July 14, from 5 to 6 pm.
Jon, Thanks for your inspiration and dedication.
June 2011 Spotlight: Artists of the Oak

GO ART! takes great pleasure in recognizing Artists of the Oak in our June Spotlight. Artists of the Oak began in February 2009 when there were few local opportunities for Orleans County Artists to exhibit, particularly in their own county.
They started banding together as a loose-knit informal group of artists in order to provide each other support, publicity and options for marketing their art. Jackie Fleckenstein suggested the name in honor of the inspiration artists found in the rivers, streams, waterfalls, swamps, woodlands, vegetation, wild flowers and wildlife and other resources which, combined, contribute to the uniqueness ofOrleans County.
They originally exhibited at Marti’s on Main, a gallery owned by Kim Martillotta. Artists of the Oak now has a permanent gallery room at Marti’s on Main, participates in GO ART!’s annual Artist Road Show and has exhibited at Niagara Arts and Cultural Center and Shaun’s Gate, Artisan Works and GO ART!.
The artists meet monthly (still informally) at Marti’s on Main to support each others’ artistic expression, to share knowledge about outlets for their work, marketing and working with collectors. They have recently focused on smaller art to make it affordable for new collectors. Current members include J.L Fleckenstein, Stacey Kirby, Kim Martillotta, Connie Mosher, Nathan Pace, Arthur Barnes, Tony Barry, Ninandre Bogue, George Borrelli, Heather Boyd, Pat Greene, Michael O’Keefe, Rose Patronski, Sue Rudnicky, Bill Ryan, Suzanne Wells, Judy Wenrick, Deborah Wilson,Tom Zangerle and Laurie Genagon Groth. Membership is open to artists of every discipline. For membersip, artists may contact Kim Martillotta at (585) 589-6715.
Congratulations to Artists of the Oak for making art and artists more visible in Orleans County and for reminding us all of the importance of art in today’s world and the joy it brings us.

Java's On Main
A cozy coffee shop at 24 Main Street in Le Roy, Java's also offers breakfast and lunch. Scratch bakery tempts you from the back of Java's. You will also find works by local artists gracing their front windows.
Moonjava Cafe
Located in the Artisan Center at 56 Harvester Ave, Batavia, and open from 7 am to 3:30 pm, Moon Java provides food, coffee and art.
"People are welcome to sit and relax and eat here if they want to," she said. "As well as for the grab 'n' go foods. A lot of it will be for take-outs."
An eclectic mix of music -- perhaps some light jazz or bluegrass -- will greet customers as they head to the black-and-citronella counters. There will be plenty of freshly roasted coffee from a vendor she did not want to divulge and espressos and specialty drinks.
Those include fruit smoothies, a caramel java frappe (a blend of coffee, caramel syrup, milk and ice topped with whipped cream), cappuccino and cafe mocha (espresso with mocha sauce and steamed milk, topped with whipped cream) and an assortment of teas, hot chocolate and steamers (steamed milk with one of several flavorings and whipped cream).
Customers can get sandwiches and baked goods from a regular delivery of homemade breads and scones from Le Roy's Scratch Bakery and muffins from the Trading Post in Stafford. There's the mozzarella and roasted pepper panini or, for the daring, the pig in peanut butter. A natural crunchy peanut butter is combined with bacon on some toasted bread. It is a favorite of Ed Smart, Renee's husband, she said.
For those wanting to smell the aroma of homemade, cookies will be made in house, she said. Those include chocolate chip, white chocolate chip or the house specialty: the Moonjava half-moon with chocolate and white icing.
"We thought this would be a really good opportunity to be part of this area's art revitalization and provide an area for tenants to have a display gallery so that you can see what kind of artists are here and what kind of businesses are here. It's to act as a way to incorporate everyone in this building."
The cafe is part of the Artisan Center, which contains all types of related businesses such as sculpting, glassmaking, photography, fencing and a theater. There are to be student works from Art a la Carte and merchandise from One World Projects, to name a few specifics. Moon Java's walls are lined with works by local artists.
Museum of Curiosities
LE ROY (Daily News, April 14, 2011)-- The Le Roy Historical Society will open a "Museum of Curiosities" in the second floor exhibit rooms of Le Roy House, 23 East Main St.
The exhibit is expected to open in May, Historical Society Director Lynn Belluscio wrote in a recent column for the Le Roy Pennysaver.
The centerpiece of the exhibit is expected to be Christopher the giraffe, who had graced the front window of the former Pontillo's Pizzeria for many years until the restaurant's closing in January.
Christopher was in town with a visiting circus in 1985 when the giraffe collapsed and died.
Bill Scheg, a Caledonia taxidermist, subsequently stuffed the giraffe and Sam Pontillo Jr. was later able to obtain the head of the 18-foot animal. It stood in the window of the pizza shop for the last five years until it was donated to Le Roy House.
"We're very glad to have him," Belluscio told The Daily News in January. "He's going to get dusted off and I'm sure he will be a favorite."
Other items expected to be featured in the "Museum of Curiosities" are rare Indian pestle stones, a huge wreath made from human hair, unusual geological specimens, an 1812 cannon ball, a medal made from melted Confederate cannons, and Jenny Veitel's "pussy willow water." The exhibit will also reveal the true story of the Le Roy flamingos that appear each April 1 in the front yard of Le Roy House.
The exhibit is inspired by 19th century museums "that were more akin to sideshows than educational institutions," Belluscio writes
In the spirit of the museums that inspired the exhibit, admission will be 25 cents.
Belluscio writes that Le Roy previously had its own "Museum of Curiosities," including an exhibit in the Staunton Art Conservatory on the campus of Ingham University that included flora fauna collected in South America and stuffed wild life hanging from the walls.
Then, during Le Roy's centennial celebration in 1934, the Daughters of American Revolution assembled a large exhibit at Woodward Library. Many of those objects were later donated to the Historical Society, Belluscio writes.
