Mark Gutman

Gutman began working as a photographer for the Daily News in 1999 and has won numerous Associated Press (AP) awards as well as National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) awards. He won the Bernard Kilenberg Memorial Award for Excellence in Photography for best over-all photo in New York State in 2006. “I have been taking concert photos around western New York since interning at the Daily News,” Gutman says. “I go to concerts when I can for work, but I also like to go for personal reasons as well.” He enjoys the allure of “big name bands and being close to the action.” The exhibit at GO ART! represents ten years of concert photos and includes everyone from Bob Dylan to Red Hot Chili Peppers. After documenting concerts at most of the major performing venues in the area including Darien Lake Performing Arts Center, Finger Lakes Performing Arts Center, and HSBC Arena, Gutman confides that his favorite concert was “seeing Les Claypool at Darien Lake. He came up-close to the camera and I actually became part of his act.”

Born and raised in Cooperstown, NY, Gutman moved to Oneonta before attending college at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, NY, where he obtained an Associates Degree in Photography. He graduated from the University at Buffalo with a Bachelor’s Degree in Photography in 1997.  In 1998, Gutman won Best of Show in the “Buffalo, Past & Present” photo contest with a pinhole image of Buffalo’s City Hall. Pinhole photography has taken a back-seat to digital images today, but Gutman admits that what started out to be a classroom continues to be an intriguing art form.

All photographs in this exhibit will be available for sale in a silent auction format. Bids will be collected beginning with the opening reception on March 7 from 6:00 -8:00 p.m. and continue through March 31. Bidding begins at $35.00 per piece. According to GO ART! program director, Patty Hawley, “This is a great way to not only own original work by a local artist, but to add a ‘rock star’ touch to your photography collection. GO ART! is thrilled to be able to display Mark’s work and to chronicle the musical talent that has traveled through the Genesee region.”
